A family was driving through Kansas on vacation. Five-year-old Tyler was looking out the car window. “Boy,” he said, “it’s so flat out
there, you can look farther than you can see.”
From the mouth of innocence comes wisdom … “You can look farther than you can see.” That statement is a perfect definition of
“vision,” and vision is something that the New Year invites, even demands. The “resolutions” we often make on Jan. 1st … and break by
Jan. 30th are witness to our vision of possible newness and positive change in our lives. People in industry try mightily to “think outside
the box,” which is another way to define “vision.” It’s our deepest hope as a nation of “visionaries” that there are those who can look
farther than they can see in solving the problems of global warming; finding a way to care for the uninsured; creating jobs for the
unemployed; providing shelter and opportunity for the homeless; and solving the political gridlock in Washington.
There is certainly one Alabama man who “looks further than he can see.” If you or I look at a pile of scrap cardboard, old car parts, used
tires and other cast-offs, we see … junk, trash, eyesore. Professor Samuel Mockbee of Auburn University looks at such a sight and sees
… new homes! He’s the visionary behind an architectural firm that specializes in making lovely, functional, low-cost public buildings and
homes out of what we usually see as trash. Poor residents of Alabama have been the recipients of these beautiful homes, some of
which have been featured in architectural magazines. Dr. Mockbee’s students are learning to see value in refuse and how to turn that
refuse into something beautiful and lasting. A group of them used more than 100 discarded car windows to make a window wall in a
community center! (1)
Divine Science offers the ongoing promise that each one of us can “look farther than we can see.” Our founders taught us truths that
persuade us that we are not what we seem to be … frail physical beings with limited power, incomplete knowledge, and a precarious
hold on the necessities of life. Instead, Malinda Cramer and Nona Brooks demonstrated through their own lives and experiences, that
we are one with an Omnipresent God; and that Oneness bestows Life, Peace, Love, Wisdom and access to every Good. “That which is
born of Spirit is Spirit.” We can’t “see” the Power of Spirit within us, but when we look “farther” – with Understanding – we come to feel
that Power, know the Truth of it and express it in our lives. Our ongoing challenge is to look past appearances. We train ourselves to “…
judge righteous judgment.” Instead of problems, we look for opportunities within the problem. Instead of seeing limitation, we count on
God’s creativity expressing in us, as us. Instead of fear, we turn firmly toward our faith that God, and all He is, is within us and around
us. We look “farther” and “see” the spiritual truth of ourselves.
